Because of the sunshine, we don’t live in the dark. Because of the rain, we have plants, food, and life. Because of Christ’s example of love in a human body on this broken earth, we can see and learn how to live in his exceptional love. We can be loving like Christ.
Christ is Our Example of Pure Love
Christ’s decision to come to us as a human to show us his pure love, means we don’t have to live in our imperfect understanding and design of love. We are not left to our imperfect understanding of what love looks like, what love says, and what love does. Through the life of Jesus, we can see how his love is founded on respect, compassion, responsibility, and healthy boundaries.
As a little girl, I saw the love of Jesus in his acts of love. I didn’t see the aspects of his love that included asking questions and giving people the freedom to choose. I didn’t see how loving like Jesus was an action that included our thoughts, words, attitudes, behaviors, choices, and beliefs.
Imperfect People Cannot Create a Perfect Love
Because Jesus came to earth and showed us God’s perfect love, we have the opportunity to work with Jesus and be transformed into his likeness in his perfect love. As we live and become like him, we can show others they have another option of love that is pure and true. When we love like Jesus, others will see his respectful love. The world will understand that loving others in Christ does not mean we accept and approve anything the world deems as love.
Christ’s love allows freedom of choice within his healthy moral boundaries. God made the ten commandments for us because he knew we needed boundaries to keep our hearts focused on him and away from sin. Jesus was the only perfect person who ever walked the earth. Therefore, he is the only example of pure, true, perfect love.
How to Love Like Jesus
Although disciples of Christ are being transformed into his likeness, we will never be perfect on this earth. Jesus knew this, and that is why he chose to be our example. God also knew this and that is why he gave us His Word, the Bible.
When you decide to be a disciple of Christ, you are choosing to learn, grow, surrender, obey, and change anything that doesn’t look, sound, or resemble Christ’s attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors. You are studying God’s word to know his heart and character. You are praising Jesus and praying with him throughout your day. To love like Christ is to live like him.
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:23-27 NIV)
Practical Ways to Love Like Jesus
Many years ago, the acronym, WWJD (What Would Jesus Do), was widely used. I believe we need to bring a new one called HWJL (How Would Jesus Love). To love like Jesus, you must have a close personal relationship with him that you are growing every day. You will also need an understanding of what love design you have been living in and how to transform it into Christ’s.
Christ-followers will continually learn and come to know his ways and obey them. We will ask ourselves, how would Jesus love in this situation? We will stop and choose how we will respond instead of reacting. We will live in respect, responsibility, and safe boundaries as we follow the moral boundaries set before us by God. Loving like Christ is living like Christ, which is made possible as he lives in you. Be determined and courageous as you love like Jesus!
